TSA began its policy of requiring airline passengers to take shoes off during security screenings in 2006, five years after Richard Reid, a passenger aboard an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami, tried to detonate explosives in his shoes. Reid was restraining by other passengers and flight attendants and later arrested.

It may soon be time to leave your shoes on at the airport. After nearly two decades of making travelers remove footwear at security checkpoints, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is reportedly phasing out the long-standing policy at many major airports across the country.

General boarding passengers have been required to take their shoes off at TSA airport security checkpoints since 2006.
