E. coli or enterococci, which indicate fecal matter contaminating water, were detected at swim spots in New York state, Massachusetts, Michigan and elsewhere, authorities said.

This week, health department officials detected above average levels of bacteria at Louisiana five beaches. One beach, Lake Charles South Beach, has remained fully closed for at least four years. The Louisiana Department of Health Beach Monitoring Program conducts weekly water quality tests at 23 beaches along the coast between May and October each year.
