Sam Burns reached the midway point of the weather-hit final round of the U.S. Open clinging to a one-shot lead over Australian Adam Scott at a water-logged Oakmont Country Club where earlier rain caused a near two-hour delay in play.

The US Open at Oakmont has devolved into chaos and Justin Thomas is not sure they should even been playing in these conditions.

The incident marks the second time in two months that Wyndham Clark's name has been tied to major-championship mayhem.

John Bodenhamer promised the longest par 3 in U.S. Open history this week at Oakmont Country Club. The USGA’s chief championships officer came through. Oakmont Country Club’s No. 8 held that distinction when it played 300 yards in 2007.

From an overhead view, the sight is somewhat jarring. The Pennsylvania Turnpike essentially cuts Oakmont's golf course in half.

Unbeknownst to even hardcore golf fans, this year's U.S. Open site used to have a neighbor, an 18-hole course anyone could play.

That format is a two-hole aggregate-score playoff, and at Oakmont would include the short par-4 17th and par-4 18th holes. Low score for the two holes would win, and if players remained tied after that a sudden-death playoff would begin at the 15th hole, then 16, 17 and 18.
