Dubbed Project Nimbus, the contract gives the Israeli government access to cloud services from Google and Amazon. Project Nimbus enabled the use of AI tools to analyze and identify objects in images and videos, according to the Times. It also included videoconferencing and “services to store and analyze large amounts of data.”

A previously undisclosed email and new documents show the Project Nimbus deal isn’t covered by Google’s general terms of service.

The tech giant, which has defended the deal to employees who oppose supplying Israel’s military with technology, feared the project might damage its reputation.

Google went ahead with its $1.2 billion contract with the Israeli government despite internal concerns over potential human rights violations.
