Waving colourful glow sticks, singing parody songs and sporting elaborate outfits, demonstrators in Seoul this week calling for President Yoon Suk Yeol's departure have highlighted South Korea's unique and creative protest culture.

Tens of thousands of South Koreans poured onto the streets Saturday, in the largest protest yet over President Yoon Suk Yeol's ill-fated effort to impose martial law on the country was thwarted.

Some photos claiming to show military activity and protests amid South Korea's martial law declaration are not what they seem.

Following the vote to overturn the declaration of martial law, National Assembly speaker Woo Won Shik said in a statement, “the declaration of martial law is invalid”, according to Korean news outlet JoongAng Daily. The news outlet reported he then asked soldiers and police who entered the building to immediately leave.

Protesters in South Korea clashed with police near the home of President Yoon Suk Yeol on Thursday, after he stated that he would "fight to the end" against impeachment following his now-rescinded declaration of martial law.

The president's statement came just hours before the main opposition party submitted a new impeachment motion against him.

The last week has seen political chaos and huge protests by angry South Koreans against Yoon. After his baffling, dark-of-night martial law edict on Dec. 3, the first in more than 40 years, throngs of lawmakers and nearly 300 heavily armed soldiers rushed to the parliament ahead of a predawn vote that reversed it after only six hours.
