The tenuous ceasefire in the two-year Israel-Hamas war appears to be holding even as complex issues remained ahead.

Hamas freed the last living Israeli hostages from Gaza on Monday under a ceasefire deal and Israel sent home busloads of Palestinian detainees, as U.S. President Donald Trump declared the end of the two-year long war that has upended the broader Middle East.

Hamas returns all 20 living hostages, while Israel has released almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees in exchange.

The living hostages are all back in Israel after being freed from two years' captivity in Gaza. Israel has now begun releasing Palestinians, with almost 2,000 due to be freed.

Hamas released the 20 remaining living Israeli hostages on Oct. 13, under the Trump administration-brokered ceasefire plan, as Israel began releasing Palestinian prisoners and detainees.

While major questions remain about the future of Hamas and Gaza, the exchange of hostages and prisoners raised hopes for ending the deadliest war ever between Israel and the militant group.
