The New York City Department of Education might have taken only a small step in that reversion with its decision to restart cursive instruction, but parents should cheer it nonetheless.

A request for a plan to ensure that cursive handwriting is taught in elementary school was approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education.

On Jan. 1, cursive writing became a state requirement for all California public school students in first through sixth grades.
