Trump Has 'Compelling Argument' About Panama, Greenland
Ever since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine I’ve been thinking about the issue of the right of nations to self-determination. I’ve done so because some on the Left, since that war began, have been essentially defending the Putin government’s invasion.
He views Mexico as a source of unwanted migration, drugs and Chinese goods, Canada as a liberal dystopia and Greenland as a weak link. Some of his remarks are bluster. The Gulf of Mexico, he says, should be renamed the Gulf of America.
Overall, a plurality of the poll’s respondents said they were opposed to the U.S. trying to gain ownership of Greenland and control of the Panama Canal. A majority also said they were opposed to the U.S. trying to attain Canada.

While Donald Trump distracts us with outlandish claims regarding Greenland and Panama, we are neglecting to examine the destruction he is planning for our democracy, (“ Donald Trump says U.S. taking over Greenland ‘is an absolute necessity, ’” Dec. 23).
There are other climate-related reasons for Mr. Trump to be interested in Canada and Greenland as they gain grain-growing land while we lose a chunk of ours to increasing temperatures, but it sounds just now as if Mr. Trump has shipping and the related matter of projecting naval power in mind.

There were no Situation Room meetings and no quiet calls to de-escalate a dispute with an ally. Just threats, counterthreats, surrender and an indication of the president’s approach to Greenland and Panama.
Some of Trumps threats to take over Greenland, Canada, and the Panama Canal are based on actual U.S. strategic goals. Others are just idiotic.
The president’s confrontational foreign policy has created opportunity for his allies on K Street who are willing to take on clients he has targeted.
