The captain of a cargo ship that collided with an oil tanker in the North Sea has appeared in court charged with gross negligence manslaughter over the death of a crew member. The Portuguese-flagged Solong and US-registered tanker Stena Immaculate crashed off the East Yorkshire coast at about 10:00 GMT on Monday.

British police said Friday the Russian captain of a cargo ship that collided with a U.S. tanker has been charged over the death of a crew member, who is missing and presumed dead. Vladimir Motin, who was the master of the Portugal-flagged cargo vessel Solong,

The collision took place about 13 miles (20km) off the East Yorkshire coast, near Hull and Grimsby, in a busy shipping area. The Stena Immaculate was anchored and drifting at a speed of 0.1 knots at 09:48 GMT on Monday, according to ship tracking site MarineTraffic.
