STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Thursday is Thanksgiving, and while a few retailers will be open for last-minute grocery purchases and pharmaceutical needs, most businesses and government agencies will be closed, allowing as many people as possible to celebrate the holiday, or watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The 98th edition of Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade will begin on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and end at Macy’s flagship store at Herald Square.

After your fill of Thanksgiving dinner, you may want to head outside for an additional holiday surprise. The Northern Lights may be visible over New York City on Thursday and Friday night, according to NOAA’s forecast.

Thursday will be a First Alert Weather Day as steady rain, wind and cooler temperatures arrive. Places north and west of New York City may also see some snow . Holiday travelers will catch a break Wednesday, but unfortunately they will have to navigate some wet weather on Thanksgiving.
