In a surprise move, the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday hired New York Rangers assistant Dan Muse as their new head coach, replacing Mike Sullivan, over Mitch Love and D.J. Smith, who were perceived as the favorites for the job.

On April 28, the Penguins announced that the team and Mike Sullivan had agreed to part ways after nine seasons. Sullivan left the team as the winningest coach with 409 regular-season wins, as well as being the bench boss for back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017.

The Pittsburgh Penguins raised some eyebrows on Wednesday afternoon when they officially hired former New York Rangers assistant coach Dan Muse to be their newest head coach. Muse’s name had only been mentioned briefly over the past few weeks and he was never really listed as one of the top favorites for the job.
