In May, Huntington Beach was confusingly added to a lengthy Department of Homeland Security list of sanctuary cities — just a few months after the City Council resolutely declared itself a “non-sanctuary city.” That pronouncement is contrary to state law that restricts local law enforcement from using resources to assist immigration enforcement.

Two Bay Area cities have landed on a list of sanctuary jurisdictions that "impede enforcement of federal immigration laws," according to a statement released by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Attorney General’s Office said the list doesn’t specify what makes Minnesota a sanctuary state, “just an assertion with no evidence behind it.”
