Today I watched as this porcupine backed out of one of its dens to enjoy the warm weather. Porcupines do not hibernate in winter, and although they tend to be more active at night, it is not uncommon to catch them out during the day. FYI, those are not its quills that you see. Porcupines have layers of fur, and what you see is the wispy outer layer of fur. Their quills only stick out when they are threatened, and this prickly fellow did not care that I was there.
